DEPTH: 18 meters
WATER TEMPERATURE: 33°C
AIR TEMPERATURE: 32.5°C
General Description:
Bobon Reef is located between the "SANDY BOTTOM" and "STEPS" dive sites. We discovered this area after watching the fish jumping at the surface. It is directly in front of a natural freshwater wellspring. It is best described as a white sand reef with coral rubble making up the majority of the bottom composition. It is a great site for a new diver to learn SCUBA diving. This dive site is for all levels of diver. We discovered a series of large coral formations that seem to be arranged in a line formation on the beautiful white sandy bottom. The site is off the north end of Mararison Island on the west side. The windward side of the island does get a little rougher seas during the day but is tolerable. It is best to align the boat off the shoreline (perpendicular to the white strip of beach) in about 12 meters of water. It is better to anchor in this area due to the winds. It is not difficult to find a sandy bottom area for the anchor. The reef starts at a depth of 5 meters and gradually goes to 40 meters. The coral formation that we call "CORAL CLUMPS" lie at 15 (+) meters. The reef is composed of hard corals with coral fish everywhere. The hard coral is very healthy and shows signs of continued growth. The soft coral houses many different kinds of native marine life. The surrounding areas fall off to 40 (+) meters. The area is good for underwater photography and excellent for training dives.
Marine Life:
This site was awesome for nudibranches, crustaceans of many type and we saw our first alligator fish (~1.5m).
Site Access:
The reef is accessible by boat only. It is a 10 minute ride from the end of Bay Bay Boulevard. It is necessary to lay anchor in the area. The current is not strong but the waves are normally breaking due to the winds from the north. We estimate visibility at 20 meters (June 2006). The site is great for all divers. A blue water ascent is possible.
